John Stevenson on the extreme right (known as Jack) was landlord of the Red Lion for 42 years, from 1906 to 1942. His son (third from right on the top row) was a successful racing cyclist.
Frank Howard Burton was landlord at the Waggon & Horses at Griffydam from 1919 to 1921. He married Sarah Else. The Elses’ kept the Waggon & Horses prior to Howard.

Top LH Corner When Playing For Birmingham City F.C.
George Haywood
c.1930 after he had joined Birmingham City.
George was born in1906 in Gelsmoor and became a professional footballer. He signed for the Football League's first Division club, Birmingham City in January 1929. George made 60 appearances and scored 23 goals in the English Football League, mainly as a centre forward.
Derek Hogg
Derek Hogg (1930-2014), the former Leicester City player between 1952 and 1958 was famed for his pace and dribbling skills on the left wing. He starred in Leicester's record breaking Division Two championship winning side. He purchased the Royal Oak in Osgathorpe in 1971 and was there 12 years.

Open air boxing tournament in Coalville on Monday evening 4th August 1931, when in the chief event, Les Wickwar (Leicester) retained the featherweight championship of Leicestershire by defeating Jack Stone (Leicester) on points.
Boxer Eric Jones
Coalville Town's local favourite Eric Jones who lived in the adjacent Melbourne Street to the Palais de Danse. He boxed at flyweight and won the Leicestershire championship in December 1929 when he knocked out Les Wickwar of Leicester, at Coalville Baths, in a scheduled 15 round - 2 minute per round contest, weighing in at 8 stones. They fought for £5 side deposits, against a purse of £10
