District nursing began in 1859 when philanthropist William Rathbone employed Mary Robinson to provide nursing care to the poor in their homes. This publication is a record of the fancy dress parade and gala in support of the local Nursing Association in 1938.

Many NW Leics villages had their own football teams who in the main became members of the Coalville and District Amateur Football League, as did Swannington. Little information has been recorded about Swannington football club and the author would welcome any further information.

John Tugby, was born in Coleorton in 1797. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Potter from Nottingham in 1818 and they had a total of seven children together. He became the landlord of the New Inn, Pegg's Green pre 1841. Following Elizabeth's death he married Mary Ann Hull in 1871. John Tugby died in 1877.

A study of 2 different local Johnson families with roots in Griffydam

George Kilby was a landlord of the Griffin Inn on Elder lane for 5 years from 1917, followed by a further11 years at the Waggon and Horses after which he became a coalminer at New Lount Colliery.

Griffydam Post Office opened along Middle Road, Griffydam in 1892. It was replaced by Pegg's Green Post Office on the 30th of April 1975.

William Johnson, later to become William Wardell-Johnson, was born in Worthington, Leicestershire, on 28th Mar 1834, and baptised as William Johnson on 3 Aug 1834 at Griffydam Wesleyan Methodist Chapel

The biography of Sheila Stewart (nee Bannister), born in Essex and daughter of Herbert Frank Bannister and Esme Margaret, nee. Barkby. Sheila's mother Esme was the first child born to Frederick and Jane Barkby (nee. Coates) in 1919 in the Woolrooms, Coleorton (Worthington parish).

The reservoir was excavated between 1957 and 1964 to provide communities and businesses in Leicester and the East Midlands with drinking water. Before that time, the valley was a place for industry and agriculture.

This publication adds to the several other publications written by the author in relation to land and property allocations at the time of the 1806 enclosure. We are fortunate to have both a schedule and accompanying map for the 1806 enclosure, which provides us with important historical facts about the area which it covers.

Samuel Platts senior was born around 1815 in Worthington, and baptised there on 26 March 1815. He died in 1885. He was the son of Sarah Platts, a spinster, born in about 1794.

A Biography of the large family of Thomas and Emma Platts

The Sketchley's were living at Griffy Hill House before the 1841 census was taken, and likely that it was well before that date. Various Sketchley generations lived there till the 2010 decade.

Charles Robert Platts, born in Griffydam and baptised in April 1834, was the illegitimate son of Robert Waldram and Frances Platts and the half brother of Jane and Eliza Platts.

Broom Leys, was a large house off Forest Road and operated as Coalville & District VAD Hospital with 75 beds in January 1917, after War Office permission was given in October 1916 and local fundraising began.

Frederick Robert Stewart was the great uncle of the author of this publication and became known as Bob in later life. He was the youngest of ten children born to Samuel and Sarah Ann (nee. Richards) at Lount Farm

THE AUTHOR

My interest in local social and industrial history in Coleorton, and surrounding villages in North West Leicestershire, began following my retirement.

I received my early education at the primary and junior schools in Griffydam where I took the 11+ at the latter before moving to Ashby Boys Grammar School.

My descendants roots are well established in Pegg's Green, Coleorton, Lount and Griffydam. In fact, a male blood line for the Stewart's goes back from my sons to the late 1600s in Lount.
